Protecting Your Kitchen from River-Bank Humidity

Vijayawada is dominated by the Krishna River. If your apartment or villa is situated near the riverbanks, or in areas prone to seasonal waterlogging, the ambient ground moisture is significantly higher than in the rest of the city. To ensure your modular kitchen survives, you must build it with defensive, moisture-proof materials.

AlcorOne Solutions is an execution-first interior contracting firm delivering turnkey residential and commercial fit-outs across South India. It is headquartered in Chennai, with offices in Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam and Rajamahendravaram. All work is manufactured in-house and assembled on site — no subcontracting, no surprise substitutions mid-project.

The Danger of Ambient Moisture

Even if your kitchen never floods, the high water table and evaporation from the river create a microclimate of high humidity. This moisture constantly attacks the base cabinets of your kitchen from the floor up.

If you build your kitchen using Commercial MR (Moisture Resistant) Plywood or MDF, this constant exposure to damp air will eventually dissolve the glue inside the wood. The base cabinets will swell, rot, and become a breeding ground for fungus and termites.

The Mandatory Defense: BWP Marine Plywood

For homes near the river, the entire bottom structure (carcass) of the kitchen must be built using IS 710 BWP (Boiling Water Proof) Marine Plywood.

BWP plywood is manufactured using undiluted phenolic resins. This makes the board chemically immune to water. It will not swell or delaminate, even if your kitchen floor is mopped daily or experiences minor seasonal flooding. While it costs slightly more than MR plywood, it is the only way to guarantee your kitchen lasts a decade.

Sealing the Edges

Moisture enters plywood through the raw cut edges. If a local carpenter manually applies the PVC edge-banding strip using a hot iron, they will leave microscopic gaps in the glue.

We mandate Factory Machine Edge-Banding using PUR glue. Polyurethane (PUR) glue is melted at extreme temperatures by heavy machinery, creating a 100% waterproof, seamless seal around every door and shelf. The river humidity simply cannot penetrate a PUR-sealed edge.

Hardware and Skirting

High humidity also accelerates rust on cheap hardware.

  • Hardware: Ensure all hinges and telescopic drawers under the sink are made of SS 304 Stainless Steel. Avoid mild steel (MS) hardware completely.
  • PVC Skirting: Never let wooden cabinets touch the floor directly. The cabinets should sit on PVC or Aluminum legs, hidden by a PVC skirting board with a rubber seal. This prevents mop water and floor moisture from ever touching the wooden carcass.

Material Grades: Choosing the Right Plywood

Selecting the wrong wood grade for a specific area is the primary cause of premature interior failure. Here is the full hierarchy:

GradeStandardWater ResistanceBest Used For
BWP (Marine Ply)IS 710Boiling water — no delaminationKitchen sink cabinet, utility storage, bathroom vanities, wet-wall units
BWR PlywoodIS 303High humidity + splashesKitchen wall cabinets, dining crockery units, dry overhead storage
Commercial / MRIS 303 (MR)Humidity only — no direct waterBedroom wardrobes, TV units, study desks
HDHMR—High moisture resistanceWardrobe shutter doors, kitchen shutters (high-gloss / PU finishes)
MDF / Particle Board—Poor — swells permanentlyLow-wear vertical partitions only; avoid in kitchens entirely
Rule: BWP IS 710 for any unit within 1 metre of a water source. BWR IS 303 for wall cabinets above the splash zone. Commercial MR for all dry rooms.

What the warranty actually covers

Almost every kitchen quotation in Vijayawada says "warranty included," and very few say who is giving it. A modular kitchen is four or five manufacturers' products assembled by a contractor, and the warranty is structured the same way. AlcorOne states its cover in three tiers rather than one number, because the tiers cover different things and expire at different times.

AlcorOne warranty tiers, running from the date of handover
TierTermWhat it covers
Carcass — plywood10 yearsDelamination, borer attack and manufacturing defect in the board of modular kitchens, wardrobes and fixed joinery built by AlcorOne. Conditional on the board grade specified in the signed BOQ being the grade supplied and installed — BWP to IS 710 in wet zones, BWR to IS 303 above splash lines. This tier covers the board itself and nothing else.
Installation and workmanship1 yearDefects attributable to how the work was built and fitted — alignment, levelling, fixing, edge-banding and similar.
Hardware, fittings and appliancesManufacturer's own termHinges, channels, drawer systems, electricals, sanitaryware and appliances carry the vendor's own warranty — Hettich, Blum, Häfele and Ebco each publish their own mechanism terms. AlcorOne registers that documentation in the client's name at handover and facilitates the claim.

Not covered under any tier: water ingress originating from base-building or plumbing defects outside AlcorOne's scope; damage from misuse, unauthorised modification, or third-party work carried out after handover; and normal wear to finishes. The full terms are on the Terms of Service page.

Read a headline warranty number in this category the same way. A ten-year figure quoted on its own is almost always the carcass tier alone, with installation sitting at one to two years beneath it. Ask any contractor which of those years are theirs and which are the brands'.

Frequently asked questions.

Do I need BWP plywood for the upper wall cabinets?

The upper wall cabinets are far away from floor moisture and sink spills. While you can use BWP plywood for peace of mind, high-quality MR (Moisture Resistant) plywood is generally sufficient for the upper units, allowing you to optimize your budget.

Is HDHMR board good for river-adjacent homes?

HDHMR (High-Density High Moisture Resistance) board is excellent for kitchen shutters (doors) because it provides a perfectly smooth finish for acrylics or laminates. However, for the internal structural boxes (especially the sink unit), BWP Marine Plywood remains the superior choice for extreme water resistance.

How do I prevent mold inside the cabinets?

Ensure your kitchen has a high-suction chimney and an exhaust fan to pull out cooking steam immediately. Avoid storing wet utensils directly inside closed wooden cabinets; use an SS dish drip-tray unit above the sink instead.

What warranty does AlcorOne give on a modular kitchen?

Three tiers, stated separately because they cover different things and expire at different times. Ten years on the plywood carcass from the date of handover, against delamination, borer attack and manufacturing defect in the board — conditional on the grade specified in the signed BOQ being the grade supplied and installed. One year on installation and workmanship: alignment, levelling, fixing, edge-banding and similar. Hardware, fittings and appliances carry the manufacturer's own term, and AlcorOne registers that documentation in the client's name at handover and facilitates the claim. Not covered under any tier: water ingress originating from base-building or plumbing defects outside AlcorOne's scope; damage from misuse, unauthorised modification, or third-party work carried out after handover; and normal wear to finishes.

Building a kitchen near the river requires a defensive strategy. Cutting costs on your core plywood will inevitably lead to a rotting, unhygienic kitchen within a few years.

AlcorOne builds kitchens designed to survive. We unconditionally mandate IS 710 BWP Marine Plywood and PUR edge-banding for all our wet-zone cabinets, ensuring your investment is completely protected from humidity.
