Top 4 Lighting Mistakes That Ruin Your Home's Ambiance

Lighting is the most powerful tool in interior design, yet it is often the most neglected. You can spend Lakhs on premium veneers and PU paints, but if you blast the room with harsh, cold white light, the space will feel like a hospital waiting room rather than a luxury home.

AlcorOne Solutions is an execution-first interior contracting firm delivering turnkey residential and commercial fit-outs across South India. It is headquartered in Chennai, with offices in Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam and Rajamahendravaram. All work is manufactured in-house and assembled on site — no subcontracting, no surprise substitutions mid-project.

Mistake 1: Relying on a Single Light Source

The traditional Indian lighting setup is a single, extremely bright LED tube light in the center of the wall. This creates a flat, shadowless room that lacks depth and warmth.

Good interior lighting requires "layering." You need three types of light in a room:

  • Ambient Light: The general illumination (e.g., ceiling downlights or cove lighting).
  • Task Light: Focused light for specific activities (e.g., a reading lamp, under-cabinet kitchen lights).
  • Accent Light: Decorative light to highlight features (e.g., a spotlight on a painting, or profile lights inside a glass display unit).

Mistake 2: Choosing the Wrong Color Temperature (Kelvins)

Lighting color is measured in Kelvins (K). Mixing them randomly or choosing the wrong one ruins the aesthetic.

  • Cool White (6,000K+): Very blue and stark. It strains the eyes and makes wooden furniture look dull. Avoid this in living spaces; it belongs in commercial garages.
  • Natural White (4,000K): A clean, neutral white. Excellent for kitchens, bathrooms, and study tables where you need accurate color representation.
  • Warm White (2,700K–3,000K): A soft, yellowish glow similar to a traditional incandescent bulb. This is the secret to a luxurious, cozy living room and bedroom.

Mistake 3: Poor Placement Over the Dining Table

A common mistake is placing ceiling downlights randomly, resulting in shadows over the dining table while the walkways are brightly lit.

The dining table should be the focal point of the dining room. Center a decorative pendant light or a chandelier directly over the table, hanging about 30–36 inches above the tabletop. This creates an intimate pool of light for dining.

Mistake 4: Ignoring Dimmer Switches

A living room serves multiple purposes. You need bright light for reading or hosting a large party, but you want dim, moody light for watching a movie or relaxing in the evening.

Failing to install dimmers means your lights have only two modes: off or blindingly bright. Installing dimmers on your ambient and cove lights instantly gives you control over the room's mood.

Frequently asked questions.

Should I use warm white or natural white in the kitchen?

Natural White (4,000K) is best for kitchens. It provides a bright, clean light that helps you see the true colors of food while chopping and cooking. Warm white can make a kitchen feel slightly dim.

How far apart should ceiling downlights be placed?

A general rule of thumb for standard 8-foot to 9-foot ceilings is to place downlights about 3 to 4 feet apart. However, the layout should be dictated by the furniture placement below, not just a strict grid.

Can I put a dimmer on any LED bulb?

No. You must ensure that both the LED bulb (or fixture) and the driver are specifically labeled as "Dimmable." Using a standard LED on a dimmer switch will cause it to flicker and burn out quickly.

How are AlcorOne projects paid for?

Projects require an upfront deposit of 20% of the total contract value before work begins, adjusted against the final invoice. The remaining payment is released in milestones tied to project progress — material procurement, civil and carpentry completion, finishing and handover — and the exact milestone schedule is agreed in writing for each project, since it varies with project size, scope and site conditions. Anything not listed in the signed BOQ is out of scope until it is agreed in writing as a variation, costed and confirmed before execution. Published rates are exclusive of GST.

What warranty does AlcorOne give on its interior work?

Three tiers, stated separately because they cover different things and expire at different times. Ten years on the plywood carcass from the date of handover, against delamination, borer attack and manufacturing defect in the board — conditional on the grade specified in the signed BOQ being the grade supplied and installed. One year on installation and workmanship: alignment, levelling, fixing, edge-banding and similar. Hardware, fittings and appliances carry the manufacturer's own term, and AlcorOne registers that documentation in the client's name at handover and facilitates the claim. Not covered under any tier: water ingress originating from base-building or plumbing defects outside AlcorOne's scope; damage from misuse, unauthorised modification, or third-party work carried out after handover; and normal wear to finishes.

Lighting is the final polish on an interior project. It sets the mood, highlights the architecture, and makes the space functional for different times of the day.

AlcorOne incorporates comprehensive electrical and lighting plans into our interior designs. We specify the correct color temperatures and ensure task lighting is placed exactly where you need it.
