4 False Ceiling Mistakes That Ruin Room Proportions

A false ceiling is excellent for hiding wiring, installing recessed lights, and adding a touch of luxury. However, over-designing it can make a room feel claustrophobic and dated. Here is how to keep it elegant and proportionate.

AlcorOne Solutions is an execution-first interior contracting firm delivering turnkey residential and commercial fit-outs across South India. It is headquartered in Chennai, with offices in Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam and Rajamahendravaram. All work is manufactured in-house and assembled on site — no subcontracting, no surprise substitutions mid-project.

Mistake 1: Dropping the Ceiling Too Low

Most modern apartments in Hyderabad have a standard floor-to-ceiling height of about 9.5 to 10 feet. A standard false ceiling needs to drop by at least 4 to 6 inches to accommodate the metal framing and recessed LED lights.

If you drop the entire ceiling by 8 inches or more, the room will instantly feel compressed and claustrophobic.

The Fix: Use a "peripheral" or "tray" ceiling design. Keep the center of the room at the maximum height (touching the true ceiling) and only drop the borders by 6 inches to house the cove lighting and downlights. This maintains the volume of the room.

Mistake 2: Overly Complex, Multi-Tiered Designs

In the early 2000s, it was trendy to have multiple steps, zig-zags, circles, and heavy wooden rafters crisscrossing the ceiling. Today, these complex designs look incredibly dated and make the room feel heavy and chaotic.

The Fix: Modern luxury favors minimalism. Stick to clean, straight lines. A simple floating island or a crisp rectangular tray ceiling with warm cove lighting is timeless and elegant.

Mistake 3: Ignoring the Wardrobe Doors

If your false ceiling drops too close to your wardrobes, you may not be able to open the wardrobe doors, or you won't have space to build loft cabinets.

The Fix: The false ceiling layout must be designed in tandem with the woodwork layout. The ceiling framing must stop short of the wardrobe line, or a pelmet must be created to ensure doors and loft shutters have full clearance to open.

Mistake 4: Poor AC and Fan Placement

If a ceiling fan is placed too close to a deep false ceiling tray, the fan blades will cut through the light thrown by the cove LEDs, creating a dizzying, flickering strobe-light effect across the room.

Similarly, failing to plan the AC copper piping before closing the false ceiling means the pipes will have to run visibly across the wall.

The Fix: Complete all AC piping (first fix) before the gypsum boards are screwed in. Ensure the fan is centered and dropped low enough (using a longer rod if necessary) so it doesn't interfere with the light paths.

Frequently asked questions.

Do false ceilings make a room hotter?

No, actually the opposite. The air gap between the true ceiling and the false ceiling acts as thermal insulation. If you are on the top floor and your roof gets hot, a false ceiling will noticeably cool the room down.

Can rats get into the false ceiling?

Yes, if there are open access points (like gaps around exhaust fans or AC pipes leading outside). Ensure all external holes are sealed with cement or wire mesh before the false ceiling is closed.

What material is best for a false ceiling?

Gypsum board is the industry standard for dry areas like living rooms and bedrooms. It provides a seamless, smooth finish. For bathrooms or balconies exposed to moisture, Grid ceilings (calcium silicate or PVC) are preferred.

How are AlcorOne projects paid for?

Projects require an upfront deposit of 20% of the total contract value before work begins, adjusted against the final invoice. The remaining payment is released in milestones tied to project progress — material procurement, civil and carpentry completion, finishing and handover — and the exact milestone schedule is agreed in writing for each project, since it varies with project size, scope and site conditions. Anything not listed in the signed BOQ is out of scope until it is agreed in writing as a variation, costed and confirmed before execution. Published rates are exclusive of GST.

What warranty does AlcorOne give on its interior work?

Three tiers, stated separately because they cover different things and expire at different times. Ten years on the plywood carcass from the date of handover, against delamination, borer attack and manufacturing defect in the board — conditional on the grade specified in the signed BOQ being the grade supplied and installed. One year on installation and workmanship: alignment, levelling, fixing, edge-banding and similar. Hardware, fittings and appliances carry the manufacturer's own term, and AlcorOne registers that documentation in the client's name at handover and facilitates the claim. Not covered under any tier: water ingress originating from base-building or plumbing defects outside AlcorOne's scope; damage from misuse, unauthorised modification, or third-party work carried out after handover; and normal wear to finishes.

A great false ceiling should go almost unnoticed—it should feel like an integrated part of the architecture that magically provides soft, warm light.

AlcorOne designs minimalist, proportionate false ceilings that enhance your room's volume. We coordinate the AC, electrical, and woodwork teams to ensure a flawless, interference-free installation.
