Top 5 Electrical Planning Mistakes Before Interior Execution

The most beautiful TV unit in the world is ruined by a tangle of black wires running down the wall. Electrical planning cannot be an afterthought; it must dictate the layout before any woodwork begins.

AlcorOne Solutions is an execution-first interior contracting firm delivering turnkey residential and commercial fit-outs across South India. It is headquartered in Chennai, with offices in Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam and Rajamahendravaram. All work is manufactured in-house and assembled on site — no subcontracting, no surprise substitutions mid-project.

Mistake 1: The TV Unit Wire Tangle

Most builders provide a single electrical socket box low on the wall. If you mount a TV directly above it, you will have power cables, HDMI cables, and set-top box wires hanging visibly between the TV and the socket.

The Fix: Before installing the TV unit paneling, the electrician must chase the wall (cut a groove) and install a PVC conduit pipe (usually 2-inch diameter) behind the wall panel. This creates a hidden tunnel for HDMI and power cables to run from the TV down to the set-top box console.

Mistake 2: Insufficient Kitchen Sockets

A modern Indian kitchen uses a mixer, microwave, air fryer, toaster, RO water purifier, and a chimney. Standard builder kitchens often provide only two or three sockets.

The Fix: Plan your "Appliance Garage." You need dedicated 15A sockets for heating appliances (microwave, air fryer) and multiple 5A sockets for lighter tools. Ensure the RO purifier socket is placed under the sink, hidden inside the cabinet, not above the counter where the wire will look ugly.

Mistake 3: Forgetting Two-Way Switches in the Bedroom

Getting out of a warm bed to turn off the main room light is a daily annoyance.

The Fix: Always plan for two-way switching for the main ambient lights in the bedroom. One switch should be at the door, and the corresponding switch should be reachable from the bed headboard. This requires electrical work before the headboard paneling is installed.

Mistake 4: Placing Sockets Behind Heavy Furniture

If you don't plan your furniture layout first, you might find that your only living room socket is directly behind a massive, heavy sofa, rendering it completely inaccessible for vacuum cleaners or laptop chargers.

The Fix: Finalize a 2D floor plan with exact furniture sizes first. Then, map the electrical points to ensure they are accessible on open walls or integrated into side tables.

Mistake 5: Ignoring Internet and Router Placement

Wi-Fi routers are often dumped on the TV unit, leading to messy LAN cables and power adapters.

The Fix: Plan a central, elevated location for the router (like the top shelf of a foyer unit or a dedicated niche in a hallway) to ensure even Wi-Fi coverage across the apartment. Ensure a power socket and the main internet fiber-optic line are routed there during the civil phase.

Frequently asked questions.

Who is responsible for moving electrical points—the interior designer or the builder?

Once the builder hands over the flat, moving electrical points is the responsibility of your interior contractor. This involves civil work (chipping the wall) and must be done before painting and woodwork begin.

Do I need a 15A socket for a hair dryer in the bathroom?

Yes, hair dryers draw a significant amount of power (often 1500W+). Plugging them into a standard 5A socket can cause the switch to melt or the circuit breaker to trip. Plan a 15A socket near the bathroom mirror.

Can I just use an extension board instead of breaking walls?

While functional, extension boards look messy, collect dust, and can be a tripping hazard or dangerous for young children. Proper internal wiring is a safer and much cleaner long-term solution.

How are AlcorOne projects paid for?

Projects require an upfront deposit of 20% of the total contract value before work begins, adjusted against the final invoice. The remaining payment is released in milestones tied to project progress — material procurement, civil and carpentry completion, finishing and handover — and the exact milestone schedule is agreed in writing for each project, since it varies with project size, scope and site conditions. Anything not listed in the signed BOQ is out of scope until it is agreed in writing as a variation, costed and confirmed before execution. Published rates are exclusive of GST.

What warranty does AlcorOne give on its interior work?

Three tiers, stated separately because they cover different things and expire at different times. Ten years on the plywood carcass from the date of handover, against delamination, borer attack and manufacturing defect in the board — conditional on the grade specified in the signed BOQ being the grade supplied and installed. One year on installation and workmanship: alignment, levelling, fixing, edge-banding and similar. Hardware, fittings and appliances carry the manufacturer's own term, and AlcorOne registers that documentation in the client's name at handover and facilitates the claim. Not covered under any tier: water ingress originating from base-building or plumbing defects outside AlcorOne's scope; damage from misuse, unauthorised modification, or third-party work carried out after handover; and normal wear to finishes.

Seamless interiors are a result of meticulous technical planning. Hiding wires and ensuring power is available exactly where you need it requires coordinating electricians, carpenters, and painters perfectly.

AlcorOne creates comprehensive 2D layouts and electrical diagrams before any work starts on site. We ensure your home is as functional and safe as it is beautiful.
